Right now, someone near you is searching for exactly what you offer. “Plumber near me.” “Cake shop West Bromwich.” “Accountant in Stourbridge.” Google usually shows a small group of local businesses on the map at the top, and lots of people choose from those without scrolling any further.
If your business isn’t one of them, that customer goes to someone else. Not because they’re better, but because Google showed them first.
That’s what local SEO fixes. This guide explains, in plain English, how Google chooses which local businesses to show, the signs you’re missing out, and what makes the biggest difference for small businesses, sole traders and trades across the UK.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO is the work of helping your business show up when people nearby search for what you offer, on Google Search, Google Maps and AI tools like ChatGPT. It focuses on your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your website and how clearly Google understands where you are and what you do.
It matters most for businesses that serve a local area: trades, salons, cafes, clinics, accountants, wedding suppliers, estate agents and any business where customers come to you, or you go to them.
How does Google decide which local businesses to show?
Google says local results are based mainly on three things (Google Business Profile Help):
Factor | What it means | What it looks like for you |
|---|---|---|
Relevance | How well your business matches what someone searched | Your profile and website clearly say what you do |
Distance | How far you are from the person searching, or the place they typed | Your location and service areas are clear and correct |
Prominence | How well known and trusted your business is | Reviews, mentions on other websites, and a strong online presence |
You can’t change where you’re based. But relevance and prominence are where most small businesses have room to improve, and that’s usually why a business down the road shows up first.
Google also confirms there’s no way to pay for a better local ranking. It has to be earned.
5 signs your local SEO needs work
- You don’t appear on Google Maps when you search for your own service and town. Try it in a private browser window, for example “electrician Walsall” or “florist Solihull”.
- Your enquiries come in waves. Busy one month, silent the next, with no clear reason why.
- Your Google Business Profile looks quiet. Few photos, missing services, old opening hours or reviews with no replies.
- Competitors with fewer years in business rank above you. That’s usually a sign Google understands them better, not that they’re better.
- Your website only mentions your town once, or not at all. Google needs to see where you work, not guess it.
If two or more of these sound familiar, there’s a good chance you’re losing local customers to businesses that simply look more visible and trusted online.
What makes the biggest difference for local SEO?
Every business is different, but these five areas move the needle most for small UK businesses.
1. A complete Google Business Profile Your profile is often the first thing a customer sees, before your website. Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results. The right categories, services, photos and up to date details all help.
2. Reviews, and replies to them Reviews are one of the biggest trust signals for customers and for Google. Google confirms that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Replying shows people there’s a real, caring business behind the listing.
3. A website that clearly says what you do and where Google connects your profile to your website. Clear service pages that mention the towns and areas you cover, like Birmingham, West Bromwich, Sandwell or Stourbridge, help Google match you to local searches.
4. Consistent business details everywhere Your business name, address and phone number should match across your website, Google profile and online directories. Mixed details make Google less sure about you.
5. Showing up in AI search too More people now ask ChatGPT and Google’s AI for local recommendations. Clear, helpful information about your business makes it easier for AI tools to understand you and mention you. This is often called AEO or GEO.

Local SEO mistakes that hold small businesses back
- Adding keywords to your business name. Calling yourself “Best Plumber Birmingham Ltd” on Google when that isn’t your real name goes against Google’s guidelines and can get your profile suspended.
- Buying or faking reviews. Google’s policies don’t allow fake reviews, and it can remove them or restrict your profile.
- Copy and paste town pages. Lots of near-identical pages that just swap the town name can be treated as spam. One genuinely useful page beats ten thin ones.
- Setting it up once and forgetting it. An out of date profile with old hours or no recent activity makes customers wonder if you’re still open.
- Using a different phone number or address in different places. It confuses Google and customers.
How long does local SEO take?
Google Business Profile improvements can make a difference within a few weeks. Website rankings for local searches usually take around 3 to 6 months. It depends on how competitive your area is, how established your business is online and where you’re starting from.
Local SEO keeps building over time. The reviews, content and trust you build this year still work for you next year, which is why so many small businesses see it as a long term investment rather than a one-off cost.
Local SEO FAQs
Is local SEO worth it for a small business? For most businesses that serve a local area, yes. Local searches often come from people who are ready to call, visit or book, so even a few extra customers a month can make a real difference.
Can I do local SEO myself? You can do the basics yourself, like keeping your Google Business Profile up to date and asking happy customers for reviews. Many business owners get help when they want faster progress or don’t have the time.
What is a Google Business Profile? It’s your free business listing on Google Search and Google Maps. It shows your location, opening hours, reviews, photos and contact details.
Do I need a website for local SEO? You can appear on Google Maps without one, but a website gives Google more information about you and gives customers more reasons to trust you.
How much does local SEO cost in the UK? It varies a lot. One-off services like an SEO audit or a Google Business Profile optimisation are a lower cost starting point, while ongoing monthly SEO costs more but keeps building results.
